Yongin 'Dongbaek Jukjeon-daero' 1.5km 'Low-Noise Road Pavement'... Completion in November
[Asia Economy (Yongin) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] A 1.5km section of 'Dongbaek Jukjeon-daero' in Giheung-gu, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do will be paved as a 'low-noise road.'
This section saw a significant increase in traffic volume following the opening of the Eunmok and Chodang underpasses in 2006, and in 2012 it was designated as a traffic noise management area under the Noise and Vibration Control Act.
Since only minor repairs had been made so far, the road surface had deteriorated, and there were many complaints from residents due to resonance noise at the entrances and exits.
Accordingly, Giheung-gu decided to invest 1.5 billion KRW of city funds to promote low-noise road paving on the 1.5km section of Dongbaek Jukjeon-daero (from Byeoksan Blooming Apartments in Jung-dong Eoeunmok Village to Chodang High School).
The low-noise non-drainage paving method adopted by the district increases the internal voids of the asphalt pavement from the usual 4% to 8-15%, allowing surface rainwater to drain naturally while the elastic base layer reduces noise by about 5-7dB.
Additionally, compared to conventional pavement, it has superior durability with increased resistance to deformation and cracking, and it offers the advantage of lower maintenance costs for drainage facilities.
Existing noise reduction measures such as soundproof walls or tunnels cost up to ten times more and can cause issues like urban landscape disruption and obstruction of views.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is also prioritizing the application of low-noise pavement in noise-vulnerable sections of highways and is gradually expanding its use.
The district plans to complete the construction by November.
