Putin Declares Martial Law in Four Occupied Areas Including Kherson in Ukraine
[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Choi] Russian President Vladimir Putin declared martial law on the 19th (local time) in four occupied regions within Ukraine, according to major foreign media reports.
President Putin made this decision during a video meeting of the Russian Security Council, imposing the measure on four regions within Ukraine: Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), and the Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) (known as Luhansk in Ukraine).
According to the related decree posted on the Kremlin website, Sputnik News reported that the martial law in these regions will take effect from the 20th.
Russia has recently been struggling against Ukrainian forces' territorial recovery offensives in the southern Kherson and eastern LPR regions. In Kherson, evacuation of approximately 60,000 residents has begun.
