The "Jeju Public Sewage Treatment Facility Modernization Project" is a large-scale construction project to completely renovate and expand the Jeju Sewage Treatment Plant located in Dodu-dong, Jeju City, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. This project is being promoted to expand the facility capacity of the Jeju Sewage Treatment Plant, which has reached its processing limit due to a significant increase in sewage generation and inflow caused by the growing population and tourists moving to Jeju, from 130,000 tons per day to 220,000 tons per day.
Upon completion of this project, the Jeju Sewage Treatment Plant will be reborn as a large-scale sewage treatment plant with a capacity of 220,000 tons per day, equipped with the latest technology. To reduce odor and improve convenience for residents, all treatment facilities will be fully underground, and the surface will be developed into a park. This project is a highly challenging construction that requires the existing sewage treatment plant to operate without interruption during the construction period.
This project is a large-scale environmental plant construction with a total project cost of 392.7 billion KRW (184 billion KRW from the national government and 208.7 billion KRW from local government), and Kumho Construction succeeded in winning the contract by forming a consortium. The construction period is 57 months from the start date, with groundbreaking scheduled for the first half of next year and completion expected by the end of 2027.
Kumho Construction’s recent contract win is interpreted as the result of applying its long-accumulated environmental technology know-how fully to the Jeju Sewage Treatment Plant. It received high evaluation scores by applying optimal technologies such as ▲an 8-step facility plan for uninterrupted operation ▲the latest membrane filtration method capable of improving discharge water quality by up to 90% compared to existing standards ▲and the application of its self-developed organic waste biogasification (KH-ABC) technology.
A Kumho Construction official stated, “To expand the sewage treatment plant from the limited 130,000 tons per day site to 220,000 tons without stopping the existing treatment facilities, we applied the latest construction methods and facility plans and conducted numerous simulations,” adding, “We believe the Jeju Sewage Treatment Plant is our finest environmental masterpiece reflecting our high technical capabilities.”
Kumho Construction has been continuously increasing its order backlog by winning this 400 billion KRW project following last month’s 220 billion KRW contract for the ‘Gumi Natural Gas Power Plant Construction Project.’ By securing orders evenly across the plant sector and environmental projects, it has established a diversified portfolio without concentration in one area.
Moreover, Kumho Construction is also standing out in technology-based bidding fields that require high technical skills. In June, it won the ‘National Icheon Memorial Park Expansion Project,’ and by winning the Jeju Public Sewage Treatment Facility project, it achieved two consecutive wins in technology-based bidding. Building on these consecutive wins, Kumho Construction plans to participate more actively in future technology-based bids.

A Kumho Construction official said, “This contract was possible because of our company’s high technical skills and diverse construction experience in environmental projects,” and added, “We will actively participate in upcoming technology-based bids and continue to secure orders steadily.”
