Assemblyman Seodongyong: "Urgent Need to Establish a School in Gwangyang Hwanggeum District"
Existing School Commute on 6-Lane Road Takes 40 Minutes... Exposure to Danger
Jeonnam Office of Education Must Strive Before Financial Investment Review Passes This Month
Two-Year Gap Between Move-In and School Opening, Need for Safe Commute Alternatives
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] There are concerns that the establishment of a new school is urgently needed in the large-scale housing complex in Hwanggeum District, Gwangyang City, Jeonnam, where approximately 4,780 households will move in starting next year.
On the 12th, Seo Dong-yong, a member of the National Assembly's Education Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea (representing Suncheon, Gwangyang, Gokseong, and Gurye-eul), stated at the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education's national audit held at Chonnam National University, “Although a new school is necessary in the Hwanggeum District, which is about to be occupied, the Jeonnam Office of Education has not responded actively.”
Rep. Seo said, “To walk to the nearby elementary school from Hwanggeum District, students must cross a six-lane road and walk for more than 40 minutes,” adding, “The road is adjacent to the port and other facilities, so large trailers and trucks mainly pass through, making the commuting environment very poor, as shown in the photos.”
He continued, “Walking to middle school is also impossible, and although the public transportation travel time is within 30 minutes, only one bus (operating four times a day) runs, which is insufficient for students’ commuting, and the route conditions are poor.”
Regarding the financial investment review scheduled for the end of this month for the establishment of an integrated elementary and middle school, he also stated, “Even if the financial investment is approved, there is already a two-year gap between the move-in period and the school opening, so measures need to be prepared during that time.”
Furthermore, he expressed concern, saying, “The Office of Education needs alternatives in case the review is not passed and delayed,” and “If alternatives are not prepared, students will be exposed to commuting in dangerous environments.”
Therefore, he urged Jeonnam Superintendent of Education Kim Dae-jung, saying, “It is the role of the Office of Education to support students so that they can focus on their studies in an optimal educational environment and safely engage in educational activities,” and requested, “Please make efforts to ensure that the agenda for establishing the integrated school in Hwanggeum District passes the financial investment review and that the school opens as soon as possible.”
