The Chuncheon District Court Wonju Branch Criminal Division 2 (Judge Lee Ji-soo) announced on the 26th that it sentenced Mr. A (63), who was indicted for violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (dangerous driving causing injury) and the Road Traffic Act (drunk and unlicensed driving), to 3 years and 6 months in prison.
Mr. A was charged with driving his passenger car in a state of severe intoxication with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.264% at around 12:18 PM on March 26 at an intersection in Wonju, where he collided with Mr. B's (49) stationary passenger car, causing injuries that required two weeks of medical treatment for Mr. B.
Investigations revealed that before the accident, Mr. A drove about 1 km while crossing the center line and driving in a zigzag pattern.
Afterward, Mr. A's driver's license was revoked, but he again took the wheel while heavily intoxicated. On May 27 at 5:39 PM, he was caught driving without a license with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.258%. At that time, Mr. A had driven about 12 km in a drunk and unlicensed state, then parked on the road and fell asleep.
Previously, Mr. A had been punished four times for drunk driving in 2004, 2014, 2015, and 2017. Notably, in 2015, he received a suspended prison sentence, and in 2017, he was sentenced to actual imprisonment.
