Gangjin-gun Selected for National Ecological and Cultural Trail Development Project Competition
The Only Selection in Jeonnam, Linked Construction of Gangjinman Reed Deck Path
[Gangjin=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-su] Gangjin-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 21st that the reed field trail around Gangjin Bay was selected for the Ministry of Environment’s ‘2023 National Ecological Cultural Trail Creation Contest Project,’ securing 1.4 billion KRW including national funds.
Among the eight sites nationwide selected for this contest project, Gangjin-gun was the only one from Jeollanam-do to be named.
The evaluation committee members who conducted the on-site inspection expressed admiration for the beauty and ecological value of Gangjin Bay and stated that it needs to be widely publicized nationwide, giving the selection even greater significance.
Through this contest project, the county plans to connect an existing walking trail with a 1.0 km ecological observation trail to improve accessibility to the Gangjin Bay reed field.
In the newly established section, shaded resting shelters will be created for pedestrians to take breaks, and observation decks will be installed to closely observe the wildlife inhabiting Gangjin Bay, including swans.
Information boards and photo zones themed around swans will be set up throughout the area, providing visitors with the joy of walking and creating spaces where they can see and feel Gangjin Bay up close, aiming to become a nature observation park where nature and people unite.
All projects will be carried out in a way that maximally preserves nature and achieves harmony. The detailed design will be completed by June next year, and the project is expected to be finished by September 2024. It is anticipated to have a high synergistic effect when linked with various ongoing ecological park creation projects.
Gangjinwon, the county governor, said, “Gangjin Bay is a treasure of Gangjin with limitless potential,” adding, “We will fully reflect the opinions of external experts and residents to create a distinctive premium ecological cultural trail in Korea and widely promote Gangjin Bay.”
Gangjin Bay, characterized as an estuarine ecological environment where the sea and rivers meet, is not only a habitat for the natural monument, the whooper swan, but also home to 10 endangered species, making it a place of high conservation value. Gangjin-gun is promoting this as a core project of the 8th local government administration from a long-term perspective to be designated as a national garden, including the establishment of an ecological information center, bicycle travel center, and local garden.
