Gwangjin-gu Publishes 'Kungjjakkungjjak Music Book Part 2' for Dementia Patients
The Second Edition of Home Cognitive Learning Materials Using Music, First Published Nationwide in Gwangjin-gu... Scan the QR Code Inside the Book with a Smartphone to Connect to YouTube and Listen to Music
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) Public Health Center, together with the Gwangjin-gu Dementia Safety Center, has published the second edition of the ‘Kungjjak Kungjjak Music Book’ to improve memory, thinking, and cognitive abilities of dementia patients.
The ‘Kungjjak Kungjjak Music Book’ was first published by the Gwangjin-gu Dementia Safety Center as the nation’s first home cognitive workbook using music. It received great responses from dementia patients, their families, and dementia-related instructors, and has been shared for use at dementia safety centers nationwide.
By scanning the QR code inside the music book with a smartphone, users are connected to YouTube where the songs play. This second edition includes a total of 16 songs that any elderly person would know, such as ‘Oppa Saeng-gak’ (Thinking of Older Brother), ‘Aengdu Namu Cheonyeo’ (Cherry Tree Maiden), and ‘Dara Dara Balgeun Dara’ (Bright Moon).
Especially this year, classical music such as Mozart’s ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ has been added, along with coloring pages featuring images of instruments like piano, violin, and harp, making it an upgraded version compared to the previous edition.
Although dementia patients sometimes refuse to learn due to cognitive decline, the music book helps them recall past memories and feel positive emotions through familiar and friendly music, naturally enhancing their memory and cognitive abilities.
The second edition of the music book will provide 300 copies to dementia patients, their families, and elderly people with mild cognitive impairment residing in Gwangjin-gu. By October, one copy will be distributed free of charge to each nursing center and institution in the area. Notably, the music included in this edition is directly linked to the Gwangjin-gu Dementia Safety Center’s YouTube channel for more stable listening.
A family member of a dementia patient using the second edition of the music book shared, “Sometimes my mother, who doesn’t recognize me, responds gratefully when we sing together the songs she used to like.”
