Court Rules Yoon Mi-hyang Must Pay 10 Million Won to Jeon Yeo-ok for 'Donmiyang' Expression
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] Independent lawmaker Yoon Mee-hyang partially won a first trial lawsuit seeking damages for defamation against former Saenuri Party (now People Power Party) lawmaker Jeon Yeo-ok, who called her "Don Mee-hyang" in connection with allegations of embezzlement of subsidies and donations.
On the morning of the 21st, Judge Lee In-gyu of the Civil Division 50 at the Seoul Central District Court ruled in the first trial of a damage claim lawsuit worth about 100 million won filed by Yoon and her daughter against former lawmaker Jeon, ordering Jeon to pay Yoon 10 million won. The remaining claims were dismissed.
Earlier, on October 5 last year, former lawmaker Jeon posted on her blog, "Yoon Mee-hyang is 'Don Mee-hyang'," and "She stuck a straw into the money she extorted from grandmothers and did all sorts of things." She also wrote, "The 1.82 million won directly sent to her daughter's bank account was said to have been used to pay off a tab at a room bar. She only commits acts deserving of divine punishment."
Yoon's side argued that former lawmaker Jeon posted false information that damaged the honor of Yoon and her daughter. On the other hand, Jeon's side denied liability for compensation, stating, "As a political commentator, I wrote a political opinion," and "At that time, various media and YouTube reported that the 1.82 million won was used to pay a tab at a room bar, so I believed it."

Yoon is suspected of embezzling subsidies and donations from the Korean Council for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan (Jeongdaehyeop, the predecessor of the Justice Memory Foundation). In September 2020, the prosecution indicted Yoon on eight charges including fraud and embezzlement. The criminal trial for this case is ongoing in the first trial.
