[Asia Economy Reporter Han Yeju] LG Display announced on the 21st that it participated jointly with LG Electronics in 'Innotrans 2022,' the world's largest railway technology exhibition held in Berlin, Germany, and unveiled its 'Transparent OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) Solution for Railways.'
Innotrans is an exhibition showcasing various railway industry-related technologies and equipment such as trains, subways, and trams, with over 3,000 companies from more than 60 countries participating.
LG Display set up booths with train interior and ticket office concepts and exhibited 'Transparent OLED for Train Windows and Doors' and 'Transparent OLED for Ticket Offices,' among others.
The transparent OLED for train windows and doors is a solution applying a 55-inch transparent OLED (for windows) and a 30-inch transparent OLED (for doors). It allows passengers to view the outside scenery through the glass while simultaneously providing operational information, weather forecasts, news, and other daily information. When passing famous landmarks and tourist attractions, various information and advertisements suitable for the time and place can be displayed directly on the glass like augmented reality (AR), offering customers a new experience. This product, developed in collaboration with global industrial glass manufacturing specialists such as Asahi Glass (AGC) and Gauzy, uses specially reinforced glass to withstand shocks and vibrations and delivers clear images both above and underground.
The transparent OLED for ticket offices replaces the glass partition between station staff and customers with a transparent OLED equipped with high-sensitivity touch functionality, enabling customers to directly operate the screen according to the staff's explanations and quickly and accurately check various information such as train schedules and tickets.
Meanwhile, at this exhibition, Deutsche Bahn, the German state-owned railway company, attracted attention by displaying a next-generation concept train equipped with LG Display's transparent OLED on its train windows. Previously, since 2020, LG Display has supplied transparent OLEDs for railways to major subway systems in Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shenzhen, and Fuzhou, as well as to JR East trains in Japan. LG Display plans to expand the application of transparent OLEDs within the mobility industry, including trains, subways, and trams, targeting global markets such as North America, Europe, Japan, and China.
