Digimon and Keroro Bread Challenge the Dominance of Pok?mon Bread
[Asia Economy Reporters Lim Chun-han and Koo Eun-mo] Digimon and Keroro bread, which were popular in the 2000s, have been re-released and are challenging the dominance of Pok?mon bread. Customers have been lining up even before stores open to purchase the bread, causing a sell-out frenzy, and on social media (SNS), stories of purchase successes and failures as well as sticker (ttibuseal) verifications are continuing.
According to Lotte Confectionery on the 21st, Digimon bread, released on the 24th of last month, has surpassed cumulative sales of 1 million units. Keroro bread, released on the 14th of this month, sold 130,000 units in just five days, causing a shortage.
Digimon bread was first introduced by SPC Samlip in 2001 and re-released in 2009. This time, Lotte Confectionery produces the product, which is sold at 7-Eleven, Lotte Mart, and Lotte Super. There are four types including Agumon's Honey Cream Bread and Patamon's Chestnut Hotteok, with 182 types of Digimon ttibuseal stickers randomly included. Keroro bread was launched by SPC Samlip in 2006 and is currently produced by Lotte Confectionery and Daedu Foods, sold exclusively at CU. Two types have been released so far, with plans to expand to six types by the end of this month. A total of 82 types of Keroro ttibuseal stickers are randomly included.
The nostalgic character bread craze began this February with the re-release of Pok?mon bread. By the end of last month, 81 million units of Pok?mon bread had been sold. Contrary to expectations that the trend would quickly fade after a brief surge, it is still difficult to find the bread in the market. There are 15 types of products including the returning Gohs Chocolate Cake and Rocket Team Chocolate Roll, with 159 types of Pok?mon ttibuseal stickers.
As character bread sells like hotcakes, overall bread sales at convenience stores are rising. According to CU, from the 1st to the 15th of this month, total bread sales increased by 28.9% compared to the previous year. During the same period, GS25 saw a 54.6% increase, 7-Eleven 100%, and Emart24 47%. Character bread dominated the top ranks in convenience store bread sales. At CU and Emart24, Rocket Team Chocolate Roll ranked first. At GS25, Pok?mon Pika Mango Cupcake and Rocket Team Chocolate Roll ranked 4th and 5th respectively. At 7-Eleven, Rocket Team Chocolate Roll was first, and four types of Digimon bread occupied ranks 2 through 5.
