The Samsung Foundation of Culture (CEO Ryu Munhyung) announced on the 14th that it has published the second issue of the cultural arts magazine 'WANA' titled 'Body and Me.'
While the inaugural issue covered crafts, the second issue, themed 'Body,' introduces six teams of choreographers and dancers selected by guest editor Kim Jaeduk (Kim Jaeduk, Barinamo, Seong Changyong, Kim Miae, Mu:p, Kim Bora).
Guest editor Kim Jaeduk said, "I hope this comprehensive guide allows people to approach the existing definitions of dance and movement from a fresh perspective through the theme of the body."
This issue is divided into three main parts. 'Dancing with the Body' deals with dance as movement of the body itself; 'Speaking with the Body' covers dance as stories contained in or conveyed by the body; and 'Drawing with the Body' explores dance as an overlap of time and space the body belongs to, a discovery of relationships, and a continuous process of defamiliarization.
The first part, 'Dancing with the Body,' introduces choreographer Kim Jaeduk first. He is a choreographer with a fresh approach who composes and writes lyrics for the music of his dance works and even sings himself, breaking boundaries. He said, "Don't try to read meaning; just enjoy the dancer's movements." The second choreographer is Barinamo. For them, dance is simply the energy possessed by all existing things. It is the natural connection between the inside and outside of forms, between big and small. The pages are arranged so that each Barinamo starts from the front and back and meets as Barinamo.
The first choreographer in the second part, 'Speaking with the Body,' is Seong Changyong. Known as a stable technician with a solid and beautiful body, he was captured on camera like a documentary. The second dancer is Kim Miae. Excelling at conveying choreographers' dances from classical to contemporary dance, she describes herself as a 'blank sheet.'
The first choreographer in the third part, 'Drawing with the Body,' is 'Mu:P (Mup).' Based on choreography and architecture, their irregularities and experiments concerning spatial issues are arranged freely on the pages. The second is Kim Bora. As a pioneer who simply wants to discover and show the unfamiliar, she records choreographers' performances on camera, and the text is composed from various perspectives of watching her performances.
The editorial design was done by design group Shinshin, following the inaugural issue, and the cover and interior illustrations were created by graphic designer Lee Dong-eon.
The magazine 'WANA,' launched last May, selects one theme in the arts field per issue and highlights it with a people-centered approach. It is published three times a year and introduces artists who provide fresh perspectives and inspiration.
