[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jeong] The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and the Ministry of Education announced on the 7th that they have launched the WE-Meet project to support university students' work experience opportunities.

On the same day, KCCI and the Ministry of Education held the launch ceremony of the 'WE-Meet Project' at the Chamber of Commerce building. This event was organized to officially declare the launch of the 'WE-Meet Project,' which starts newly from the second semester of this year, and to encourage university students. Participating students can gain hands-on experience in digital new technologies and new industries during their studies and develop core job competencies required by companies.

The WE-Meet Project is a program that provides work experience opportunities to university students through cooperation among KCCI, the Ministry of Education, universities, and companies. It is linked with university regular curricula and extracurricular programs, and credits are also awarded. Students participating in this project directly carry out problem-solving tasks presented by companies based on the knowledge and skills learned at university, and through support (mentoring) from employees and on-the-job training (internships) at companies, they can build necessary job competencies and experience corporate culture.

Additionally, the project is linked with the 'Digital New Technology Talent Cultivation Innovation Shared University' initiative and will be piloted during the second semester and the winter session this year, with full-scale expansion planned from next year. The Innovation Shared University project develops and operates advanced field curricula by sharing human and material resources among universities and linking with industries and research institutes to cultivate core talents in new technology fields.

This year, among the total of eight consortia of the Innovation Shared University, five consortia?Next-generation Semiconductors (Seoul National University and six other universities), Big Data (Seoul National University and six other universities), Biohealth (Dankook University and four other universities), Immersive Media (Konkuk University and six other universities), and Future Automobiles (Kookmin University and three other universities)?are leading the expansion of students' work experience in partnership with leading domestic and international companies. Participating companies include SK Hynix, AWS, MS, Newbase, Kitten Planet, EBS, Twentyons, Horiba Korea, and AR Tech.

To support interactive communication and smooth execution between participating students and company employees, a dedicated online communication platform for WE-Meet will also be operated. When students submit their project plans and interim/final deliverables on the online platform, designated company employees (mentors) provide feedback and suggestions for revisions and improvements, allowing students to strengthen core competencies necessary for corporate life through this feedback process. Completion certificates will be issued, and outstanding teams will be selected and awarded separately.

Kang Seok-gu, Head of the Research Division at KCCI, stated, "We are facing a period of great change such as the 4th Industrial Revolution, digital transformation, and low-carbon transition, and the type of talent companies want and their hiring methods are also changing significantly. Especially, as job-centered rolling recruitment expands, job relevance has become the most important hiring criterion for companies." He added, "We hope that students will develop preliminary job competencies by encountering and trying new things through the WE-Meet Project, and KCCI will actively support this project in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, universities, and companies."
