'Blue Sky Day' Seoul City Cracks Down on 'Idling Emissions' with Citizens
Event Held at Fountain Square in Front of Cheongwadae
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the 7th, Seoul City announced on the 6th that it will conduct special inspections on emissions and idling targeting old diesel vehicles, which account for 26% of fine dust emissions in the Seoul area, in cooperation with citizens to mark "Blue Sky Day."
Blue Sky Day is the first official UN commemorative day proposed and adopted by South Korea, and this year marks its third anniversary. For this event, the city organized a total of four inspection teams, with nine members from Seoul's Eco-friendly Mobile Unit and 20 members from civic groups participating in the inspections.
The inspection site is near the Blue House. Due to the recent increase in tourists around the Blue House, emissions such as exhaust fumes and fine dust from tourist buses have caused inconvenience to citizens and nearby residents. Therefore, special inspections will be conducted focusing on this area. From 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., joint inspections with citizens will be carried out to monitor idling and exhaust emissions from old diesel vehicles, and vehicles found violating regulations will be subject to administrative measures under the Air Quality Preservation Act.
On the same day, from 10:00 a.m. for 30 minutes, a campaign will be held around the Blue House fountain in cooperation with civic groups. Since the theme of this year's "Blue Sky Day" is "The Air We Share, Adding My Actions," the campaign plans to provide guidance on banning idling and establishing eco-friendly driving habits targeting tourist bus parking areas and tourists around the Blue House.
