Yeosu City Hosts 'Yeosun 10·19 Peace and Human Rights Literary Award' Contest
Submission deadline November 2... Four awards including Grand Prize and Excellence Prize to be selected in Novel and Poetry categories
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Cheol-hoon] Jeonnam Yeosu City (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) announced that it will hold the ‘Yeosun 10·19 Peace and Human Rights Literary Award’ contest in collaboration with the Yeosu branch of the Korea Writers' Association (Branch Chief Song Eun-il).
The contest works should focus on the historical truth of the Yeosun Incident, and the realization of the values of peace and human rights through reconciliation and coexistence, and anyone nationwide can apply.
Novels must be at least 70 pages on 200-character manuscript paper (including medium and long novels), and poems must be unpublished original works with up to 10 pieces per person.
Submissions can be sent by email or registered mail by November 2 (Yeosu-si Museon-ro 50, Sangga 1-dong 203, Yeosun 10·19 Peace and Human Rights Literary Award Operating Committee).
The total prize money is 33 million KRW, with 12 million KRW awarded to the grand prize winner in the novel category, 6 million KRW for the excellence award, 10 million KRW for the grand prize winner in the poetry category, and 5 million KRW for the excellence award.
The winning works will be announced on December 1 after strict evaluation by external judges, and will be published as a standalone book following the awards ceremony on December 12.
A city official said, “We expect this contest to be a meaningful opportunity to correctly inform the historical truth of the Yeosun Incident and to comfort the souls of the victims,” adding, “We hope many writers will participate, and we ask citizens to take an interest and watch closely.”
Meanwhile, Yeosu City is preparing various cultural and artistic events in October, when the Yeosun Incident occurred, including the ‘74th Joint Memorial Ceremony for the Victims of the Yeosun Incident,’ the Yeosun Incident opera ‘Silence of 1948,’ and the ‘Yeosun 10·19 and Jeju 4·3 Art Exchange Exhibition.’
