[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Young-won] As the number of new COVID-19 cases reached the 80,000 range, the number of critically ill patients and deaths decreased by about 40 compared to the previous day.
According to the Central Disease Control Headquarters on the 2nd, as of midnight, 89,586 new COVID-19 cases were reported, bringing the total cumulative cases to 23,417,425.
The number of new cases increased by 8,013 compared to the previous day but decreased by 11,530 compared to a week ago on the 26th of last month. The number of new cases over the five days of this week starting Monday were 43,118, 115,623, 103,961, 81,573, and 89,586 respectively.
The number of deaths, which had sharply increased to 112 the previous day, decreased to 64 on this day. By age group, 40 were aged 80 and above, 15 in their 70s, 7 in their 60s, and 1 each in their 50s and 40s. The total cumulative deaths reached 26,940, with a fatality rate of 0.12%.
The number of critically ill patients currently hospitalized was 508, down by 47 from the previous day. The number of critically ill patients has been decreasing for four consecutive days since the 29th of last month. The nationwide critical care bed occupancy rate is 37.8%, with 36.8% in the metropolitan area and 40.0% in non-metropolitan areas.
With 86,536 new home treatment cases added the previous day, the total number of patients currently under home treatment reached 501,707. After dropping to the 400,000 range the previous day, it rose back to the 500,000 range within a day.
