Dongmyung University (President Jeon Ho-hwan), the only four-year university in the Busan and Ulsan regions with a Department of Military Science, appointed Jeong Tae-young, a discharged army captain, as a professor dedicated to discipline and character education.
The university announced on the 24th that starting from the second semester of this year, Professor Jeong Tae-young will conduct essential character and virtue education for future officers.
Na Seung-hak, head of the Department of Military Science (Director of the Drone Education Research Center), said, “If an officer lacks character or the ability to lead, it negatively affects both themselves and the soldiers, as well as the military organization. Therefore, character education for prospective officer candidates is very important. We will establish a system where a professor dedicated to discipline will take charge of character education to cultivate proper national defense talents.”
The Department of Military Science held a faculty workshop on the 22nd, just before the start of the second semester, where they explained the teaching policies for the semester, counseling and character development methods, and the department’s mid- to long-term development plans.
Since early this year, the department has also hired Professor Im Kyung-won, a specialist in written exams, to provide level-based guidance. All graduates of this department are commissioned as officers in the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps.
To become an officer, one can enter university, go through ROTC, and follow the path of a commissioned officer (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force). To be selected as an officer, candidates must pass a high barrier including written exams, interviews, and physical fitness tests.
Established in 2013 and recognized as a cradle for officer training, Dongmyung University’s Department of Military Science plans to recruit 35 students through early admission for the 2023 academic year. The selection criteria are 50% based on school records, 40% on interviews, and 10% on physical fitness tests. The physical fitness test, which is difficult for examinees, will not include running but will only consist of sit-ups and push-ups.
As a specialized department, it offers education suited for the Fourth Industrial Revolution era (including free acquisition of national drone certification) and English education by native-speaking professors.
For ‘Do-ing’ education, which means challenge, experience, and practice, the department operates security field trips and a program from Hallasan to Baekdu Mountain. It is the first among military science departments nationwide to support outstanding students in obtaining national drone certification free of charge.

Most universities related to drones provide education through external drone education institutes, which incurs high tuition fees, but Dongmyung University’s Drone Education Research Center can provide education internally, allowing students to obtain certification for free. The university is also preparing a drone soccer team, which will be launched in the second half of the year.
