Sustainable Marine City Pohang Discusses Establishing 'East Sea Blue Carbon Center' with Kyungpook National University
Gyeongbuk Province, Pohang City, and Kyungpook National University Commit to Carbon Neutrality and East Coast Development Efforts
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Lee Gang-deok, Mayor of Pohang, held a meeting on the 23rd at the City Hall External Cooperation Office with Hong Young-hwa, President of Kyungpook National University, who visited the city, to discuss the establishment of the East Sea Blue Carbon Center and the foundation for the establishment of Kyungpook National University’s East Sea Campus.
The meeting was attended by Kim Nam-il, Head of the East Sea Headquarters of Gyeongbuk Province, Park Chun-wook, Head of the Carbon Neutrality Promotion Team at Kyungpook National University Campus, and others. In response to the recent increase in abnormal weather due to global warming and the international efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, Gyeongbuk Province, Pohang City, and Kyungpook National University agreed on the necessity of establishing the East Sea Blue Carbon Center for sustainable carbon neutrality and decided to actively promote it together.
Kyungpook National University expects that if the East Coast Campus is established on the planned site for the East Sea Blue Carbon Center, existing research projects in new marine business fields such as blue carbon and underwater gliders will be further concretized and yield results through synergistic effects.
Unlike the West and South Seas, the East Sea is easily accessible to deep waters and is an optimal site for research on seaweed blue carbon, which has a high carbon sequestration rate. Upon establishment, the East Sea Blue Carbon Center is expected to serve as a hub institution encompassing research, education, and policy related to blue carbon in the East Coast region.
Mayor Lee Gang-deok said, “Through this cooperation, we expect not only environmental protection such as greenhouse gas reduction but also a significant influx of young people,” adding, “We will continue to provide unwavering support to discover new marine industries.”
