Dexter and National Museum of Korea Collaborate to Release Immersive Content Video of Pyeongsaengdo
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyungsoo Park] Visual effects (VFX) content company Dexter Studio has created a modern media art version of the 8-panel folding screen 'Pyeongsaengdo,' which depicts the ideal life dreamed of by people in the late Joseon Dynasty.
Dexter announced on the 23rd that it has collaborated with the National Museum of Korea to unveil the 'Pyeongsaengdo Digital Restoration Immersive Content Video' to visitors. Pyeongsaengdo is composed of eight digital panels and is permanently exhibited in the Immersive Hall 2 of the National Museum's Digital Immersive Video Hall. It is also available for online viewing via a webpage.
Dexter was responsible for the entire digital heritage immersive content project, from planning the interactive webpage to the final video production. Approximately 500 assets were 3D modeled and rigged, then animated using Unreal Engine to produce a 4K video.
A representative from Dexter’s PR team said, "Pyeongsaengdo contains numerous elements such as grass, trees, people, animals, houses, and clothing," adding, "We actively utilized this vast amount of data to create an immersive video."
They continued, "Elements requiring meticulous work, such as the 'Cheongsachorong' lantern that lights the way and the 'Eosahwa' official hat worn after passing the state examination, were vividly realized," explaining, "It is a work enhanced with three-dimensional movement."
Pyeongsaengdo is a painting that pictorially represents the life of a Joseon Dynasty aristocrat, capturing life events such as a first birthday party, wedding ceremony, passing the state examination, official career, and 60th birthday celebration on an 8-panel folding screen. Reflecting the dreams and ideals of people during the Joseon period, it serves as an excellent scholarly resource that reveals the era’s circumstances and lifestyle in the late Joseon Dynasty.
Kim Wook, CEO of Dexter, said, "The digital heritage industry is a new way to introduce cultural heritage to the world in another form," and added, "Since folding screens were an art culture enjoyed widely from the Joseon royal court to the common people, this was a particularly meaningful attempt." Co-CEO Kang Jongik also stated, "Based on Dexter’s advanced technology, we will continue to present cultural heritage content with high historical value," and "We will strive to contribute to the preservation and development of historical culture."
