[Kim Maengnyeong's Golf English Conversation] "Driver Selection Know-How"
When buying a driver, consider your body type, swing, head speed, age, and other factors.

When you visit a golf shop, you will see numerous drivers on display. It can be difficult to decide which driver to choose. You should buy a driver considering your body type, swing, head speed, age, and other factors. There are three main considerations when purchasing a driver. First, select the driver head. The head shape affects the driver’s distance and ball flight, with options such as deep face and shallow face.
Next is the driver loft, which varies from 9 degrees to 13 degrees.
Lastly, there is the shaft. It influences shot accuracy, trajectory, and distance. Shafts are made of steel or graphite, a ceramic-based material. The degree of flex, or how much the shaft bends under force, is categorized as Extra Stiff (X), Stiff (S), Regular (R), Senior (A), and Ladies (L). Typically, male golfers use S or SR shafts. The shaft length averages 45.25 inches for men and 43.75 inches for women. Drivers longer than 46 inches violate the rules.
When buying a driver, do not be swayed by advertisements for new models. New models do not necessarily guarantee better distance or accuracy. Expensive drivers are not always better. High-rebound drivers do not always produce longer shots. Consider your physical condition for the next 3 to 5 years when purchasing a driver. Always test the driver and consult an expert before making a decision.
A(shopper): I’d like to see the latest driver, please?
B(salesman): Yes, certainly. This is the new Callaway driver?it just came out this month.
A: May I try it out?
B: Yes, of course. Let’s go out to our indoor range. Okay, go.
A: Great, it feels good. I’ll take it.
B: For you, I’ll give you a good deal.
