On the 18th, the Cheongju District Prosecutors' Office asked the court to sentence Mr. A (34) to one year in prison for violating the Animal Protection Act at the first trial held at the Cheongju District Court Criminal Division 4 (Presiding Judge Nam Jun-woo).
Mr. A is accused of cruelly abusing an abandoned cat he adopted on January 11, including stabbing it with a weapon.
The case came to light through a report by Mr. B, who had been temporarily caring for the cat. While Mr. B was inquiring about the cat's condition from Mr. A, suspicious signs were discovered, leading to Mr. A being confronted and the abuse of the cat being revealed.
The rescued cat was severely injured. There was bleeding in the eye, and the fascia of the left leg and part of the tail were severed. The veterinarian who examined the cat at the time stated that the wounds appeared to be cuts made by a cutter knife rather than an accident.
Subsequently, Mr. B posted a petition on the Blue House National Petition website demanding punishment for Mr. A and filed a complaint with the police through an organization called the Cheongju Cat Mom Association.
During the police investigation, Mr. A reportedly stated, "The cat bit me, so I did it in a fit of anger."
At the court hearing that day, he admitted to all charges and pleaded for leniency.
