Prosecution Seeks 2-Year Prison Sentence Again in Appeal Trial of 'Subway Line 9 Assault Woman'
"No Agreement Reached, Victims Demand Severe Punishment"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] The prosecution has again demanded a two-year prison sentence for a woman in her 20s who was sentenced to one year in prison for repeatedly hitting the head of a man in his 60s with a mobile phone on Seoul Subway Line 9.
The 4th Criminal Appeals Division of the Seoul Southern District Court (Presiding Judge Yang Hyung-kwon) held the first appeal hearing on the 18th morning for A (26), who was tried on charges of special injury, insult, and assault.
In the first trial, A was sentenced to one year in prison, and both the prosecution and A filed appeals.
At the hearing, the prosecution stated, "The defendant did not reach a settlement, so the damage has not been restored, and the victims want the defendant to be severely punished," adding, "The case is serious, the nature of the crime is bad, and the defendant does not appear to be genuinely remorseful, which led to the appeal," and again demanded a two-year prison sentence.
In response, A's side appealed that although efforts were made to reach a settlement, it was realistically difficult. A's defense attorney explained, "The victim says they do not want a settlement," and added, "Even if the defendant sincerely reflects on their wrongdoing and actively tries to restore the damage, according to the revised Deposit Act, there is realistically no way to do so, even by making a deposit."
A also pleaded, "I deeply repent and reflect in my heart," and said, "I have firmly vowed never to enter prison again in the future, and I sincerely want to apologize to the victims and ask for their forgiveness."
