Prosecutor General Recommendation Committee to Start at 2 PM... "We Will Conduct a Thorough Review to Select the Best Candidate"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] The Prosecutor General Candidate Recommendation Committee (Recommendation Committee), which is selecting the first Prosecutor General candidate under the Yoon Seok-yeol administration, began its meeting at 2 p.m. on the 16th at the Ministry of Justice building in Gwacheon.
At the meeting, the Recommendation Committee will narrow down the pool of candidates to 3 to 4 people. Previously, the Ministry of Justice received nominations for Prosecutor General candidates through a public call from the 12th to the 19th of last month. After obtaining consent from the candidates and conducting verification, Minister of Justice Han Dong-hoon shortlisted nine candidates and notified the Recommendation Committee of the list.
The list reportedly includes seven current officials and two former officials. The candidates are Yeo Hwan-seop, Director of the Judicial Research and Training Institute (24th Judicial Research and Training Institute class, hereafter referred to as class), Kim Hu-gon, Chief Prosecutor of Seoul High Prosecutors' Office (25th class), Noh Jeong-yeon, Chief Prosecutor of Busan High Prosecutors' Office (25th class), Lee Doo-bong, Chief Prosecutor of Daejeon High Prosecutors' Office (25th class), Lee Joo-hyung, Chief Prosecutor of Suwon High Prosecutors' Office (25th class), Jo Jong-tae, Chief Prosecutor of Gwangju High Prosecutors' Office (25th class), and Lee Won-seok, Deputy Chief Prosecutor of the Supreme Prosecutors' Office (27th class). Former prosecution officials include Koo Bon-seon, former Chief Prosecutor of Gwangju High Prosecutors' Office (23rd class), and Cha Maeng-gi, former Chief of the Goyang Branch of Uijeongbu District Prosecutors' Office (24th class).
The Recommendation Committee is composed of former Prosecutor General Kim Jin-tae (Chairman), four non-ex officio members, and five ex officio members. The non-ex officio members include former Prosecutor General Kim, Kwon Young-jun, Standing Advisor of the Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice, Kwon Joon-soo, Professor at Seoul National University College of Medicine, and Lee Woo-young, Professor at Seoul National University School of Law. The ex officio members are Kim Hyung-doo, Deputy Director of the Court Administration Office; Lee Jong-yeop, President of the Korean Bar Association; Jung Young-hwan, President of the Korean Association of Law Professors; Han Ki-jung, Chairman of the Council of Law Schools; and Shin Ja-yong, Director of the Prosecution Bureau at the Ministry of Justice.

Chairman Kim Jin-tae opened the meeting by stating, "With the upcoming implementation of the revised Prosecutors' Office Act and Criminal Procedure Act, which will bring significant changes to the criminal justice system, and with major investigations underway, the importance of the Prosecutor General cannot be overstated." He added, "As chairman, I will do my best to conduct a thorough review and select a person who can fulfill the role well so that the prosecution can perform its fundamental duties effectively."
