According to the National Institute for Korean Medicine Development on August 11, the first kick-off meeting for the "Research on Establishing Korean Medicine Infectious Disease Response Measures," involving the Korean medicine community, academia, and the government, was held.
This research project was initiated to analyze the achievements and research results of traditional medicine in the field of infectious diseases both domestically and internationally, and to develop ways for Korean medicine to contribute to public health in the future.
This "Research on Establishing Korean Medicine Infectious Disease Response Measures" is significant as it is the first study to involve experts from public institutions, academia, and relevant associations in the field of infectious diseases in Korean medicine.
Going forward, the plan is to establish clinical evidence through policy development and case analysis of infectious diseases based on Korean medicine, and to propose measures for building a rapid response system for future infectious disease outbreaks.
To prepare these measures, Kyung Hee University Korean Medicine Hospital will serve as the lead institution, organizing and operating four detailed research tasks, with three additional institutions supporting these sub-projects to ensure systematic research.
The recently held first kick-off meeting included presentations on the implementation plans for each of the four sub-projects, signaling the official start of the "Research on Establishing Korean Medicine Infectious Disease Response Measures."
First, the first sub-project will investigate and analyze policies, systems, and guidelines related to infectious disease response based on traditional medicine both in Korea and abroad, in order to identify ways to utilize Korean medicine within the domestic healthcare system.
The second sub-project will collect and analyze case records of Korean medicine used in the treatment of infectious diseases (such as COVID-19 treatment and post-COVID-19 conditions) to establish clinical evidence.
The third sub-project will develop case report forms (CRFs) related to infectious diseases and build a cloud platform to continuously collect and analyze clinical information during infectious disease outbreaks.
The fourth sub-project will establish a comprehensive plan and develop a rapid response system for the prevention and management of infectious diseases based on Korean medicine.
Jung Changhyun, President of the National Institute for Korean Medicine Development, stated, "Korean medicine focuses on strengthening immunity and enabling the body to respond to viruses," and added, "We will conduct effective research and development to leverage the strengths of Korean medicine in protecting public health during infectious disease situations."
