Gwangju Seo-gu Wins 'Minister of Environment Award' at Sustainable Development Contest

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shin Dong-ho] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Kim I-gang) announced on the 11th that it received the Minister of Environment Award at the ‘24th Korea Sustainable Development Awards Contest’ hosted by the Ministry of Environment and organized by the National Council for Sustainable Development.

The Ministry of Environment and the National Council for Sustainable Development hold an annual contest targeting local governments, citizens, organizations, and companies to discover excellent cases related to sustainable development policies.

Experts in related fields participate as judges for the policy implementation cases, selecting outstanding cases through document screening, online public voting, and presentation evaluations.

To promote sustainable development policies, Seo-gu has introduced sustainable development policies since 2020 with the goal of creating a sustainable happy city together with residents. To implement this, a dedicated team was formed, ordinances were enacted, and basic and implementation plans were established.

Additionally, Seo-gu has been actively promoting 109 detailed projects for the 17 goals and their execution, as well as 77 indicators for evaluation.

In particular, from the stage of establishing the policy promotion foundation, public-private cooperative governance was operated, and the policies were promoted together with residents. Before the biennial main evaluation, improvement measures were prepared through monitoring by the Sustainable Development Committee every six months.

The sustainability of the district administration was checked together with residents, and the results were shared, which is known to have received excellent evaluations in this contest.

The award ceremony was held at the ‘2022 Korea Sustainable Development Conference’ in Boryeong, Chungnam, with officials from the Ministry of Environment and sustainable development promotion organizations in attendance.

Mayor Kim I-gang said, “This award has become an opportunity to show that Seo-gu is a leading local government in sustainable development and a sustainable happy city. Going forward, Seo-gu will continue to discover and practice small tasks in daily life together with residents to create a happy city where people grow together with nature.”
