The 40th Shin Dong-yeop Literary Awards: Choi Ji-in, Jeong Seok-suk, Kim Yo-seop
[Asia Economy Reporter Seo Mideum] The winners of the Shin Dong-yup Literary Award and the Changbi New Writer Literary Award, organized by Changbi, have been announced. The Shin Dong-yup Literary Award winners are ▲ poet Ji-in Choi’s poetry collection "Working, Working, Loving" ▲ novelist Seok-sook Jeong’s short story collection "Homi" ▲ critic Yo-seop Kim’s critique "Bleeding Mirror: Militarism and Masculinity of Victimhood."
The judging committee stated, “We have gladly agreed to select Ji-in Choi’s poetry collection, which captures the sorrow and protest of contemporary youth’s arduous lives through a unique polyphonic poetic style and rhythm; Seok-sook Jeong’s short story collection, which vividly portrays rural life in Jeolla dialect and characters, a rare sight in today’s Korean literature; and Yo-seop Kim’s critique, which explores distorted masculinity and the harms of militarism under the divided regime, as the winners of the 40th Shin Dong-yup Literary Award.” The judges included novelist Geum-hee Kim, literary critic Soo-i Kim, poet Woo-young Jeong, and literary critic Ki-wook Han.
Poet Ji-in Choi began her literary career in 2013 by winning the “World Literature” New Writer Award. Novelist Seok-sook Jeong gained recognition in 2013 with a short story published in “Korean Fiction,” and critic Yo-seop Kim was recognized in 2015 by winning the Changbi New Criticism Award.
The Changbi New Poet Award was given to poet Sang-hee Kim for “Speaking Hope” and four other poems, and the Changbi New Fiction Award was awarded to writer Young-ha Joo for “Oyster and Sand.”

The award ceremony is scheduled to be held at the end of November. The prize money for the Shin Dong-yup Literary Award is 20 million KRW each for poetry and fiction, and 7 million KRW for criticism. The New Writer Literary Award prize money is 5 million KRW for poetry and 7 million KRW for fiction and criticism. The winning works will be published in the Fall 2022 issue of "Changjakgwa Bipyeong."
