New Coast Guard Officer Saves Man Choking on Food, 'Heartwarming'
Mokpo Maritime Police Officer Woo In-hyeok Quickly Provides Emergency Care Using Heimlich Maneuver
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] It has recently come to light that a newly appointed coast guard officer saved a man who was choking on food by performing the Heimlich maneuver, warming the hearts of those around him.
The hero of this good deed is Police Officer Woo Inhyeok (29, male) of the Seosan Police Substation under the Mokpo Coast Guard, and his act of kindness was shared by his fellow colleagues working alongside him.
According to the Mokpo Coast Guard, Officer Woo visited a restaurant in Mokpo around 1 p.m. on the 19th of last month when he noticed Mr. A (male), seated next to him, struggling in pain as food got stuck in his throat.
At the time, Officer Woo was dining with his family and saw Mr. A suddenly clutch his throat and head toward the exit. Sensing the emergency, he immediately followed and performed the Heimlich maneuver, removing the obstruction from Mr. A’s throat in about one minute.
Afterward, Officer Woo checked on Mr. A’s condition, confirmed there were no health issues, and quietly left the scene.
The Heimlich maneuver is an emergency procedure that involves applying pressure to the chest to urgently remove an obstruction when the airway is blocked by a foreign object.
Officer Woo Inhyeok said, “I was able to save a precious life thanks to the first aid training I received during the coast guard’s rookie training. I only did what was natural, but I feel a bit embarrassed because many people around me have praised me.”
