Gyeonggi Northern Fire Department Warns, "Highest Risk of Electrical Fires from July to September"
In the Past 5 Years, Electric Fires Accounted for 36.9% of July-September Incidents in Northern Gyeonggi
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] The Northern Gyeonggi Fire and Disaster Headquarters warned on the 2nd that "the risk of electrical fires is highest during the peak summer heat from July to September," urging caution.
According to the Northern Fire and Disaster Headquarters, out of a total of 13,451 fires that occurred in northern Gyeonggi over the past five years (2017?2021), 2,718 fires were recorded during the July to September period.
The main cause of fires during this period was "electrical fires," accounting for 1,002 cases or 36.9%. This figure is somewhat higher than fires caused by negligence at 855 cases (31.5%) and fires due to mechanical factors at 426 cases (15.7%).
The Northern Fire and Disaster Headquarters analyzed that the high proportion of electrical fires is influenced by the concentration of aging residential and industrial facilities (such as small factories).
In particular, excessive machine operation causing overcurrent, loosened wire connections, and moisture and dust accumulation in distribution panels and outlets due to the hot and humid summer environment are identified as major causes of electrical fires.
Precautions and preventive measures for electrical fires include ▲ avoiding simultaneous use of multiple high-capacity electrical machines and devices ▲ limiting loads exceeding the allowable current ▲ prohibiting the use of wires with stripped insulation ▲ using standard wires ▲ using fuses or circuit breakers with rated capacity ▲ regular inspection of leakage circuit breakers and replacement of aging electrical equipment ▲ prohibition of illegal electrical installations ▲ turning off electrical devices when going out.
