Seoul City Provides Real-Time Congestion Information for Subway and Bus Public Transportation... Real-Time Congestion Guidance
Display of Leisure, Normal, Congestion Levels... Check Bus BIT, Subway Destination Information Boards, and Ttota Subway App
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 1st that it is providing vehicle congestion information for buses, subways, and other public transportation to enhance convenience for citizens using public transit.
For buses, real-time arrival and vehicle congestion information are provided through the Bus Information Terminal (BIT). Bus interior congestion is categorized into three levels: "Available," "Normal," and "Crowded." Bus congestion is calculated and transmitted based on boarding and alighting data from transportation card terminals. "Available" means there are enough seats to sit, "Normal" indicates standing passengers can hold onto handrails, and "Crowded" means passengers are standing in the aisle between seated passengers, with bodies touching or more.
Congestion levels are also displayed when searching for bus information on map applications, so passengers can check in advance and choose less crowded vehicles for a more comfortable ride.
Subway congestion information for Lines 1 through 8 is provided in four levels: "Available," "Normal," "Caution," and "Crowded." Detailed information is given for each subway car, allowing passengers to move to less crowded cars if one is heavily occupied, making subway use more convenient. The "Available" and "Normal" levels indicate comfortable movement, "Caution" means passengers may bump into each other while moving, and "Crowded" signifies difficulty moving inside the train. Congestion levels for Lines 1 to 8 are measured using various methods such as transportation card data and onboard passenger weight sensors to improve accuracy.
To help passengers intuitively understand subway congestion, the Ttota Subway app provides car-by-car congestion information for Lines 1 through 8 in the metropolitan area. The Ttota Subway app offers real-time train information and allows easy temperature control requests for vehicles through location data. It also provides various services needed when using the subway, such as bicycle ramps and boarding information for electric wheelchairs.
