Hyundai Rotem Signs Basic Contract for K2 Tank Export with Poland
May Visit by Polish Defense Minister to Hyundai Rotem Changwon Plant
First Batch of K2 in Korea, Second Batch of Polish Version to be Produced in Korea and Poland
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Sun-mi] The first-ever overseas export of South Korea's main ground weapon, the K2 tank, is becoming a reality.
Hyundai Rotem announced on the 28th that it has signed a basic contract with the Polish Armaments Agency in Warsaw, Poland, regarding the urgent procurement of K2 tanks and an order of 1,000 units of the Polish version of the K2 tank.
This basic contract is a legitimate procedure conducted prior to the signing of individual execution contracts that will proceed in the future as part of Poland's acquisition process. It was signed to determine the total quantity and project scale for budget setting. The execution contracts will specify detailed matters such as delivery schedules and specifications for the first and second deliveries, training, and maintenance conditions.
Hyundai Rotem will first supply the urgently needed domestically produced K2 tanks to Poland. Subsequently, the final delivery will include quantities produced at local Polish factories as well as domestically produced units.
Notably, from the second batch onward, the K2 tanks standardized to the Polish military system with additional specifications will be mass-produced locally. This contract is expected to enable Poland to secure its own tank production capability.
Poland showed active efforts to push the contract by conducting an on-site inspection of the K2 tank at Hyundai Rotem's Changwon plant in May. In June, the Polish state-owned defense group PGZ signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Hyundai Rotem for joint development of tanks and armored vehicles at the 2022 Eurosatory, an international defense exhibition in France.
With this contract, Hyundai Rotem has established a monumental stepping stone for the first overseas export of the completed K2 tank. Hyundai Rotem had previously proven its excellence by successfully transferring K2 tank technology to Turkey in 2008.
Additionally, the Norway-type K2 tank (K2NO), which Hyundai Rotem is pursuing for export, demonstrated outstanding performance by successfully completing missions even in severe cold during winter testing conducted locally earlier this year. At the World Defense Show (WDS), the largest international defense exhibition in the Middle East held in Saudi Arabia last March, the Middle East-optimized K2 tank attracted attention from local buyers.
