Wando-gun Holds Investment Attraction Briefing for Marine Bio Companies
[Wando=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Kyung-pil] Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 26th that it held the ‘Wando-gun Marine Bio Enterprise Investment Attraction Briefing Session’ on the 21st at the Federation of Korean Industries building in Seoul for startups and companies wishing to move into the Marine Bio Joint Cooperation Research Institute, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of December.
About 40 people, including marine bio researchers and representatives from 30 companies such as Botamedi Co., Ltd., participated in the briefing session.
The briefing session proceeded with an explanation of the international R/D cooperation relationship by Dr. Philippe Potin of the Roscoff Institute in France, which collaborates with Wando-gun, followed by a presentation of research results on cognitive improvement and therapeutic effects using Wando-produced seaweed tot, an explanation of the investment environment for Wando-gun’s marine bio industry and the Marine Healthcare Efficacy Verification Center, and company introductions.
First, through the ‘Research Results Presentation on Cognitive Function Improvement and Therapeutic Effects of Wando-produced Tot,’ the excellence of Wando seaweed and the progress of various R/D projects were explained, suggesting the development direction of the marine bio industry.
Based on reproducibility verification experiments showing that the abundant phytosterols in ‘tot’ help prevent and alleviate Alzheimer’s dementia, the county plans to increase the income of tot-producing fishermen by developing marine bio products.
Additionally, companies attending the briefing session listened to opinions on support measures to grow into core companies within the marine bio research complex prepared by Wando-gun.
The representative of Company A requested, “Please make efforts so that the briefing session does not end as a one-time event but continuously manages companies with investment intentions and provides consulting tailored to the companies’ situations to enable investment in Wando-gun’s marine bio industry.”
Shin Woo-cheol, the mayor of Wando-gun, said, “The marine bio industry is about advancing the primary production and simple processing fisheries industry of seaweed to the next level,” adding, “We will utilize raw materials extracted from marine organisms such as seaweed, abalone, and flatfish as bio-materials to develop health functional foods, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics, thereby upgrading the seaweed and marine bio industry.”
He also stated, “We are making great efforts to open an era of mass consumption of abalone, flatfish, and seaweed by developing medical foods from a preventive medicine perspective and to create new income models for fishing villages through the marine bio industry.”
Meanwhile, the county is establishing a cutting-edge marine bio industry ecosystem foundation in the Sinji-myeon area by 2030, including the Marine Bio Joint Cooperation Research Institute, Marine Healthcare Efficacy Verification Center, and seaweed active material certification and production facilities, aiming to revitalize the marine bio industry.
