[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] POSCO International announced on the 26th that it will supply steel curtain walls and roofing materials made from eco-friendly materials produced by POSCO and POSCO Steelion for the expansion of Terminal 2 at Incheon International Airport.
The quantity to be supplied for the expansion project is 23,000 tons. The supply is scheduled to continue until 2024, when the Terminal 2 expansion, part of Incheon Airport's Phase 4 construction project, is completed.
This order is significant as it was achieved through collaboration between the POSCO Group and a small but strong company certified by POSCO INNOVILT for exterior panel processing technology. POSCO certifies products made with 100% POSCO steel that demonstrate technological and market viability as INNOVILT, recognizing them as leading sustainable future construction materials.
The curtain wall is an outer wall that acts as a curtain without bearing the building's load, primarily made from aluminum, steel, and other materials. Steel offers superior insulation and fire resistance compared to aluminum and other materials, while being an eco-friendly material with low carbon emissions and recyclability.
The POSCO INNOVILT-certified steel curtain wall boasts excellent strength and structural performance, allows for wide views and openness, and supports diverse designs, making it highly preferred at construction sites. The steel curtain wall applied this time is an irregularly shaped product with a maximum height of 22 meters, the tallest in Korea.
POSCO International devised a construction method where curtain walls are manufactured in modular units at the factory and then assembled on-site using bolt fastening instead of the traditional welding method. This is expected to shorten construction time and greatly enhance on-site safety.
Additionally, high-performance materials produced by POSCO Group companies, such as POSMAC with excellent corrosion resistance from POSCO and aluminum fluorine-coated steel sheets from POSCO Steelion, will be used on the 80,000㎡ roof of the passenger terminal.
A POSCO International official stated, "We are now able to provide eco-friendly smart solutions that align with Incheon International Airport's vision of a 'SMART airport, eco-friendly airport, and airport with art.' By combining the excellence of POSCO products with the technological capabilities of small but strong companies, we will open the era of 100 million passengers at Incheon Airport, the nation's representative airport."
Incheon International Airport is preparing to become the world's third-largest landmark airport by securing a passenger capacity of 100 million through the Terminal 2 expansion, which will be completed by 2024 as part of the Phase 4 construction project.
