[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Recently, unique premium products such as supercars, small movable houses, and golf boxes have been sold at large supermarkets and convenience stores, attracting attention. Distribution companies are moving beyond simply selling daily necessities and food items as in the past, and it seems that the boundaries of product categories and prices are now breaking down.
According to Emart on the 25th, at the warehouse-style discount store Emart Traders Dongtan branch, which opened in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, a supercar priced over 200 million KRW and two movable small houses priced between 30 to 40 million KRW were sold. The supercar sold on the 20th of last month was a Ferrari 458 Spider, a used product priced at 265 million KRW. The Ferrari 458 Spider is famous as the car driven by Neymar, the Spanish professional soccer player from FC Barcelona.
The movable small houses were sold at the movable small house exhibition held during the store opening event on the 27th of last month. On the first day, a customer purchased a movable small house made by Takasho Korea priced at 38.5 million KRW. On the 30th of last month, another customer bought a movable small house priced at 49.8 million KRW. This product is a premium movable small house featuring full glass on the front and a sliding glass door on one side.
From that day until the 7th of next month, the Dongtan branch is holding a roadshow with the interior specialist company LX Hausys, providing personalized interior consultations suitable for the characteristics of the new town. Dongtan 1 New Town began occupancy in 2007 and now requires interior replacement due to aging, while Dongtan 2 New Town residents have interior demands, which led to the planning of this event.
With the success of supercars and movable small houses, the Dongtan branch plans to increase its lineup of high-priced products in the future. Dongtan has a larger population and a higher proportion of high-income earners working in large corporations compared to other cities. In fact, the population living within a 10 km radius of the Dongtan branch is 1.32 million, exceeding Suwon Special City (1.19 million), Yongin City (1.07 million), Seongnam City (930,000), and Hwaseong City (890,000). Additionally, Dongtan has 73% of its population in their 30s and 40s, the most economically active age group, which is higher than the national average of 60%.
Convenience stores are also emerging as outlets for high-priced products. Emart24 introduced a screen golf box priced close to 60 million KRW in April. It received 5 to 6 inquiries per day on average and sold a total of three units. The buyer was a man who owns a private villa in Hongcheon, Gangwon Province, and decided to install the screen golf box in the outdoor idle space of the villa to enjoy golf there. Another buyer, who operates a horse riding club in Gwangju, Jeollado, confirmed the purchase of two screen golf boxes to be used as auxiliary facilities at the riding club. At CU, three movable houses were sold during last year's Lunar New Year holiday: one premium duplex house priced at 15.95 million KRW and two premium single-story houses priced at 10.45 million KRW each.
