Hyundai Steel Suncheon Plant Wins Lawsuit on Conversion of Non-Regular Union Workers to Regular Employees
[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] The Suncheon Court ruled in favor of the irregular workers at Hyundai Steel's Suncheon plant on the 21st.
This comes 6 years and 2 months after Hyundai Steel's in-house subcontracted workers filed a civil lawsuit demanding regular employment in May 2016.
The 2nd Civil Division of the Suncheon Branch of the Gwangju District Court (Chief Judge Im Seong-cheol) ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, the irregular workers at Hyundai Steel's Suncheon plant, in the lawsuit confirming worker status against Hyundai Steel.
The court stated, "They can be recognized not as irregular workers belonging to subcontractors, but as regular workers belonging to the original contractor," and added, "The defendant has an obligation to express intent to employ the plaintiffs."
The irregular workers welcomed the ruling.
The Hyundai Steel Irregular Workers' Branch of the Gwangju-Jeonnam Headquarters of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and the Pan-Citizen Countermeasure Committee for the Regularization of Hyundai Steel Irregular Workers in the Eastern Jeonnam Region held a press conference in front of the Suncheon Branch on the same day, stating, "This has lifted the burden of illegal dispatch and irregular employment from the workers and their families and opened hope for working as regular employees."
Lee Byung-yong, head of the Hyundai Steel Irregular Workers' Branch, said, "This ruling has established the legal basis for converting illegally dispatched workers to regular employees," and emphasized, "Hyundai Motor Group and Hyundai Steel must accept the lawsuit result and promptly implement the regularization of irregular workers."
