[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Hyun-ji] As the United States has requested the South Korean government to join the semiconductor supply chain alliance (Chip4), the Chinese government expressed its expectation that South Korea will not participate.
Zhao Lijian, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a regular briefing on the 19th regarding Korean media reports that "the U.S. government recently asked South Korea to inform them of its decision on joining the Chip4 alliance by the end of August," “We hope that the relevant parties will maintain an objective and fair stance and do much to help safeguard the stability of the global semiconductor industry and supply chain based on their long-term interests and the principles of a fair and equitable market.” This implicitly indicated that China hopes South Korea will not join Chip4.

Spokesperson Zhao further stated, "While advocating the principles of free trade, the United States abuses its national power to politicize, instrumentalize, and weaponize science and technology and economic and trade issues, engages in coercive diplomacy, attempts artificial industrial transfer and decoupling, destroys international trade rules, and divides the global market," adding, "In a world economy deeply integrated with one another, such behavior by the U.S. goes against the current, fails to win public support, and is bound to end in failure."
