Kwon Ji-woong: "There Should Be at Least One Ordinary 'Supreme Council Member' Who Is a Tenant and Raising a One-Year-Old Child"
Kwon Ji-ung, Former Democratic Party Emergency Committee Member
Declares Candidacy for Supreme Council Member
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Kwon Ji-woong, former Emergency Response Committee member of the Democratic Party of Korea, officially announced his candidacy for the position of Supreme Council member in the August 28 party convention on the 14th, stating, “I will become an outside Supreme Council member who protects the interests of the vulnerable with experience in solving housing issues for the homeless under the new Democratic Party leadership.”
He particularly said, “Shouldn't there be at least one Supreme Council member who protects the interests of the vulnerable with experience in solving housing issues for the homeless under the new Democratic Party leadership, a tenant and an ordinary Supreme Council member raising a one-year-old child?”
At a press conference held at the National Assembly that morning, former committee member Kwon stated, “What the Democratic Party needs is not generational change but a change of power.” He added, “This August party convention is called 'Eodaemyeong,' 'Banmyeong,' and the '97 Group,' but is this really an alternative for the Democratic Party to gain public support? I think there is no hope for the Democratic Party as it stands.”
He emphasized, “Only when the Democratic Party returns to being a party for ordinary people will it become a party that works with more citizens and wins among the people.” To this end, Kwon promised to transform the party into △ a Democratic Party of the square △ a responsible Democratic Party △ a confident Democratic Party △ a Democratic Party of N types △ a Democratic Party of its members.
Kwon, who has worked to alleviate housing inequality through the nonprofit organization Mindalpaengi Union, stressed, “I will listen to the voices of citizens facing housing problems such as young people who did not inherit property from their parents and middle-aged people who have become poor.” He also raised his voice that listening to various citizens’ demands, including care issues and irregular labor problems, is the most important democratic task for the Democratic Party.
He continued, “It is shameful that the Democratic Party covers up sexual misconduct issues and forces members to resign through tricks to pass bills.” He promised, “No matter how flexible politics is, the public will not trust a party that abandons its principles. I will create a confident Democratic Party that upholds its principles.”

Regarding former Emergency Response Committee Chair Park Ji-hyun’s candidacy, he said, “I thought it was admirable that she challenged the party leadership,” but added, “However, as many people are concerned now, elections generally have rules and proceed according to those rules, so it was inappropriate to say ‘the party is blocking me.’” He further said, “Considering the timing and the role, if it is thought to be somewhat out of line, I believe there are many ways for former Chair Park to work together within the Democratic Party.”
