Jeonnam Provincial Forest Resources Research Institute Leads Carbon Neutrality Efforts
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] The Jeollanam-do Forest Resources Research Institute signed a business agreement on the 14th with the Gwangju Viewer Media Center of the Korea Communications Agency to jointly work toward a carbon-neutral society through the activation of resource circulation in the fields of forestry and media.
According to the agreement, the two organizations will actively cooperate to promote eco-friendly resource circulation under the slogan “Together with the local community, back to nature,” by reducing carbon emissions through the collection and disposal of discarded media resources (waste electronic products) and increasing carbon absorption through tree planting activities.
The Jeonnam Forest Resources Research Institute will raise awareness of the necessity of tree planting by providing citizens participating in the recycling of waste media resources with trees that have excellent carbon absorption and fine dust reduction functions, and will support tree information and technology along with research on carbon-neutral forests.
The Gwangju Viewer Media Center supports the MeCycle project to recycle media resources and protect the environment, educational programs to strengthen media capabilities in the forestry sector, and the production of citizen content to spread awareness of carbon reduction.
MeCycle is a term combining Media and Recycle, and is the nation’s first environmental protection campaign in the media field aimed at creating a resource-circulating society by environmentally recycling waste media devices such as mobile phones and computers.
In the future, difficult-to-process waste media appliances can be disposed of free of charge through collection boxes installed at the Gwangju Viewer Media Center and the Forest Resources Research Institute. The collected media waste will be recycled through an eco-friendly process linked with the collection system of the Korea Electronics Products Resource Circulation Cooperative.
Participants will be provided with seedlings such as camellia and Hwangchil trees grown by the Jeonnam Forest Resources Research Institute. Camellia and Hwangchil trees are seedlings with excellent carbon absorption and fine dust reduction functions. The purpose is to offset some of the carbon emitted during the use and disposal of media resources and to work together toward carbon neutrality.
Director Oh Deuk-sil said, “Taking this agreement as an opportunity, we will promote environmentally friendly recycling through cooperation in the forestry and media sectors, establish a resource circulation system, and contribute to sound development for practicing carbon neutrality.”
Center Director Cho Hyun-yong said, “I am pleased to be able to discover and cooperate on new environmental protection projects together with the forestry sector,” and added, “I hope many people actively participate in recycling waste media devices and carbon-reducing tree planting.”
The Gwangju Media Center opened in 2007 and is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. It provides free support for media education throughout the life cycle and equipment and facility rentals for media participation through the Broadcasting and Communications Development Fund. Since last year, through an agreement with the Korea Electronics Products Resource Circulation Cooperative, it has started the nation’s first environmental protection campaign in the media field by collecting waste media devices free of charge and recycling them in an eco-friendly manner.
The Jeonnam Forest Resources Research Institute has made efforts toward “Carbon Zero (step to zero)” by pilot planting a 3-hectare thorn tree forest with fine dust reduction functions this spring. Starting with this, it is taking the lead in practicing carbon neutrality by establishing a climate change response forest bio-research complex on 165 hectares of provincial forest in Sangdeung-ri, Masan-myeon, Haenam.
