The event, held over two days starting on the 12th, was attended by 58 first- and second-year female students enrolled in science high schools in the Busan area.
The participating students engaged in a career concert, campus tour, and research facility exploration with six female professors from UNIST’s Departments of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Energy Chemical Engineering, as well as UNIST students, under the theme ‘Life and Vision of Women Scientists.’
The event was organized by Pukyong National University, the lead institution of the Southeast Region R-WeSET project, and participating university UNIST to provide science high school female students with the opportunity to hear directly from research leaders in science and technology fields about their lives and visions and to design their career paths.
Seo Seon-min, a second-year student at Busan Science High School who participated in the event, said, “The professor’s words about not only grades but also truly liking something, and to concretely set and practice dreams as verbs rather than nouns, left a strong impression on me.”
Professor Yoon Hee-in of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, who participated with the students, said, “It was a meaningful and enjoyable time to interact with high school students,” and added, “I hope that among them will emerge researchers who are much cooler and more excellent than me.”
Professor Yoon is the first researcher to complete both undergraduate and doctoral courses at UNIST and then be appointed as a professor at her alma mater. She also worked as a researcher at the world-renowned IT company Qualcomm after her doctorate.
Jung Chan-gyu, principal of Busan Science High School, said, “I expect that through this event, female students at the science high school will gain confidence in their dreams and be able to step into a bigger world,” and expressed gratitude to the universities for organizing such a good event.
Pukyong National University was selected as the lead university in the Southeast region for this year’s regional STEM female talent development project (R-WeSET 2.0) by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Foundation for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology.
