The event was organized by the province to raise awareness of 'fair trade,' which is based on dialogue, transparency, and respect, and ensures that producers in developing countries receive fair prices to sustain their livelihoods, as well as to promote the use of fair trade products.
At the event, Governor Kim enjoyed coffee and chocolate provided with the staff and then visited the fair trade promotion center next to the first-floor convenience store of the provincial office to encourage the officials.
At this occasion, Governor Kim stated, "Child labor and environmental issues are not problems of any single country. These are issues that cannot be resolved without joint efforts," expressing his interest in fair trade and the social economy.
The event was conducted by providing 1,200 cups of coffee made from beans sourced from Indonesia, Peru, and Rwanda to internal staff at the provincial office convenience store.
The 1,200 cups of coffee were sold out before closing during the event held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day.
Additionally, 12 types of products including fair trade coffee, chocolate, sugar, and fruits were sold, and fair trade promotional materials were distributed.
A 48㎡ (33㎡ + 15㎡) fair trade promotion center was established at the cafe next to the first-floor convenience store of the provincial office.
Here, Gyeonggi Province promotes fair trade-related projects and exhibits and sells fair trade products. The province plans to continuously utilize the provincial office fair trade promotion center as a space for fair trade promotion and education in cooperation with fair trade organizations such as the Hwaseong City Fair Trade Council.
Since enacting the 'Gyeonggi Province Fair Trade Support and Promotion Ordinance' in 2017, the province has taken the lead in pioneering fair trade distribution channels by supporting the sale of fair trade products.
In 2019, Gyeonggi Province was certified by the International Fair Trade Towns Committee as the largest fair trade city among over 2,000 cities (towns) worldwide and was re-certified in 2021.
