Kim Byeongnae, Mayor of Gwangju Nam-gu, to Lead the 'Mayors' Council'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Kim Byeong-nae, mayor of Nam-gu, Gwangju, has been elected as the chairman of the ‘8th Term Gwangju Metropolitan City District Mayors’ Council,’ an administrative council of five autonomous districts in the Gwangju area.
According to Nam-gu on the 13th, Kim Byeong-nae, mayor of Nam-gu, Im Taek, mayor of Dong-gu, Kim Yi-gang, mayor of Seo-gu, Moon In, mayor of Buk-gu, and Park Byeong-gyu, mayor of Gwangsan-gu, held their first meeting of the 8th term in the morning and unanimously appointed Mayor Kim Byeong-nae as the chairman of the district mayors’ council for the first half of the year.
Mayor Kim Byeong-nae will serve as the chairman of the Gwangju Metropolitan City District Mayors’ Council for two years until July 2024.
Chairman Kim Byeong-nae stated, “As the district mayors’ council has made great efforts for the stability of residents’ lives and balanced development, we will do our best to closely cooperate with Gwangju City and the central government during the 8th term to jointly resolve common issues of the five autonomous districts and achieve mutual development.”
He added, “The relationship between the central government and local governments should move beyond institutional and formal decentralization to a partnership that cooperates for a better life for the people,” and “We will devote all our efforts to completing true local decentralization through horizontal decentralization.”

In addition, the five district mayors in the Gwangju area discussed ways to revitalize personnel exchanges between Gwangju City and the autonomous districts at the first regular meeting of the 8th term. They agreed to submit a joint proposal prepared through the collection of opinions from the five districts to Gwangju City and to continue promoting institutional improvements.
