The Gwangju City Council announced on the 11th that Jeong Muchang, a member of the Democratic Party from Gwangsan-gu District 2, was elected as chairperson, and Shim Cheol-ui and Lee Gwisun were elected as the 1st and 2nd vice chairpersons, respectively.
Jeong Muchang ran as the sole candidate in the chairperson election and was elected with 23 out of 23 votes from attending council members.
He stated, “I proposed a council prioritizing citizens' lives and livelihoods, a council communicating with citizens, collaboration among members, an honest council, and a council that works through research,” adding, “I will operate a dignified and capable council that listens attentively to the diverse demands of citizens, matching the council’s elevated status and authority.”
Shim Cheol-ui was elected as the 1st vice chairperson by receiving 18 votes (5 invalid votes, 0 abstentions), achieving a majority, and in the second election, Lee Gwisun received 22 votes (1 invalid vote, 0 abstentions), also achieving a majority.
Shim Cheol-ui expressed gratitude to fellow council members for entrusting him with the heavy responsibility of vice chairperson in the first half and pledged to lead the council alongside Chairperson Jeong Muchang to become a hopeful and beloved council for citizens.
Lee Gwisun said, “I will actively support the vigorous legislative activities of fellow council members through empathy and communication.”
In addition, the appointments of standing committee members for the Administrative Autonomy Committee, Environment and Welfare Committee, Industry and Construction Committee, and Education and Culture Committee have been completed.
