[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) offers the chance to experience ‘Seongsu Popcorn’ at the Seongsu Industrial Culture Complex Theme Space.
The event named ‘Seongsu Popcorn’ refers to the ‘pop-up store’ and ‘mini concert’ held at the Seongsu Industrial Culture Complex Theme Space near Seongsu Station.
From the 1st for three days, the district opened a handmade shoes pop-up store at Theater SS within the Seongsu Industrial Culture Complex Theme Space to promote and sell handmade shoe products, aiming to widely introduce Seongsu handmade shoes to citizens commuting through Seongsu Station.
Theater SS, a media art video hall featuring the past, present, and future of Seongsu-dong on a large LED wall, serves as a pop-up exhibition stage to promote local companies, creators’ brands, and works. On the day of the event, two companies, Arena and Hanul (Charles Studio), which are tenants of the Seongsu handmade shoes joint sales center, participated and received high praise from citizens.
Additionally, Stage SS, equipped with functions such as flea markets, busking, exhibitions, and a smart unmanned library, hosted busking performances. Small-scale performances linked with Metro Artists operated by Seoul Metro were held, creating a lively atmosphere and providing cultural performances that allowed people using Seongsu Station to pause and enjoy.
The district established the ‘Seongsu Industrial Culture Complex Theme Space’ at the end of last year to create cultural, resting, and regional revitalization spaces for citizens by leveraging the diversity and dynamism of Seongsu-dong, which has emerged as a representative center of industry and cultural arts in Seoul.
In particular, the complex theme space, consisting of five areas including Stage SS and Theater SS, was created to enable not only the handmade shoe industry gathered in Seongsu-dong but also local companies, youth, and artists to collaborate with the community to generate industrial, cultural, and artistic content, allowing citizens to enjoy diverse content within the region.
The district organized this event to revitalize the Seongsu handmade shoe industry, which has been hit hard by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, and to help promote products of small handmade shoe manufacturers. It also provides performance opportunities for young artists who had few chances to perform due to the pandemic’s impact on the performing arts scene. The district plans to actively promote Seongsu Popcorn going forward.
The ‘Seongsu Popcorn’ event, combining pop-up stores and mini concerts, will be piloted two to three times until July, targeting handmade shoe companies that are tenants of the Seongsu handmade shoes joint sales center.
Subsequently, the event will be actively expanded to include various companies in leather, clothing fashion, and other sectors in Seongsu-dong, which has become a fashion mecca popular among young people. The event will be regularly held twice a month along with busking performances.
Companies wishing to participate in the pop-up store can apply through the Seongdong-gu Office website after mid-July. Handmade shoe, leather craft, and fashion accessory companies located in Seongsu-dong are eligible to apply. Artists wishing to perform can also apply. For more details, contact the Corporate Revitalization Team of the Regional Economy Division at Seongdong-gu Office.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “I hope people enjoy the diverse industries, culture, and changes of Seongsu-dong at the Seongsu Industrial Culture Complex Theme Space near Seongsu Station,” adding, “We will continue to prepare many contents so that people can experience even more diverse cultures in the vibrant and lively Seongsu-dong.”

Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Seong-heon) will stage the play ‘The Gravity of Objects’ at the Sinchon Culture Development Center (57 Yonsei-ro 2na-gil) from the 15th to the 23rd.
The youth arts group ‘Creative Space My Own Room’ is participating as part of the ‘Sinchon Culture Development Center Creative Process Support’ program, which aims to establish a creative foundation and promote artistic activities for young artists.
This play deals with the story of gravity, the force that pulls objects toward each other.
The creators, Son Eun-ji and Ahn Chang-hyun, reinterpret and express in various ways the discoveries made by ‘meeting,’ ‘looking into,’ ‘observing closely,’ and ‘re-examining’ objects.
The play incorporates multiple perspectives on objects through theater and performance, ranging from real stories drawn from the memories of the two creators to imagined tales.
Son Eun-ji, who is responsible for creation, direction, and acting, explained, “This play is like an old violin with dust piled up and strings loosened greeting you with ‘Hello. You’re here?’”
The group name ‘My Own Room’ originates from the work ‘A Room of One's Own’ by writer Virginia Woolf. It implies the author’s idea that if an artist has a private room free from disturbance and 500 pounds, infinite creation is possible through mental and economic independence.
The performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets can be purchased via Interpark. Seodaemun-gu residents receive a 50% discount when booking. For more details about the performance, please refer to the Sinchon Culture Development Center website.
