[Asia Economy Reporters Bomryeong Geum, Juni Park] Kim Jin-pyo, a five-term lawmaker from the Democratic Party of Korea, was elected as the Speaker of the 21st National Assembly for the second half of its term.
On the afternoon of the 4th, 275 lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties gathered in the plenary session of the National Assembly and voted, resulting in Kim receiving a total of 255 votes to be elected as Speaker.
According to the National Assembly Act, Kim resigned from the Democratic Party and became an independent. The Speaker cannot hold party membership during their term.
