A Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Strikes Southern Iran... At Least 3 Dead, 19 Injured

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that at around 2 a.m. that day, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred 110 km southwest of Bandar Abbas, near the Strait of Hormuz in southern Iran. The depth of the epicenter was observed to be 10 km.
According to major foreign media, Mehrdad Hasanzadeh, head of the disaster authorities, stated on Iranian state television, "Unfortunately, so far 3 people have died and 8 have been injured." The semi-official Iranian Fars News Agency reported that the number of injured was 19.

According to EMSC, at 2:17 a.m., a magnitude 5 earthquake with an epicenter depth of 40 km occurred; at 3:54 a.m., a magnitude 5.7 earthquake with an epicenter depth of 10 km; and at 3:55 a.m., a magnitude 6.2 earthquake with an epicenter depth of 10 km occurred. Due to these aftershocks, there are concerns that the number of casualties may increase further.
