37 Island Residents Caught Cultivating Opium Poppy, a Drug Ingredient

The Tongyeong Coast Guard in Gyeongnam announced on the 24th that since April, they have been conducting a special crackdown on drug-related crimes and arrested 37 island residents in Tongyeong who cultivated poppies in their home gardens, seizing 2,326 poppy plants.
According to the Coast Guard, the amount of poppies seized in the past three years reached 714 plants in 2019, 3,374 plants in 2020, and 1,109 plants in 2021.
Poppies are plants used as raw materials for drugs, and cultivating them without permission can result in up to five years of imprisonment or a fine of up to 50 million won.

A Coast Guard official stated, “Island residents often cultivate narcotics as folk remedies, believing they are effective for pain relief,” and added, “We will strongly crack down to create a marine environment safe from drugs.”
