Sinan-gun, Hongdo 'Island Daylily Festival' Held
Enjoy Hongdowon Mystery and Beautiful Scenery
[Sinan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-kyung] Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, is hosting the 'Island Daylily Festival' on Hongdo, one of the most desired tourist destinations in South Korea.
Under the theme of 'Hongdo Island Daylily Festival with Culture and Art,' the festival will be held from the 8th to the 17th of next month. The festival features a land photo zone from Hongdo 1-gu to 2-gu villages and the island daylily flowers blooming along the mysterious coastline of Hongdo as its backdrop.
The plant species known as 'Hongdo Wonchuri' has no separate botanical name but is distinguished by its unusually large and beautiful flowers compared to other daylilies. Its fine texture gives it high ornamental value, making it a plant of great significance as a native species, intertwined with Hongdo's cultural environment and history.
When mainland residents endured the 'barley hump' famine period, Hongdo residents survived hunger by making namul (seasoned vegetable dishes) from daylily leaves. After the daylily flowers withered, they cut the leaves to braid ropes for thatched roofs, boat ropes, baskets, and other essential daily tools.
Choi Seong-jin, the festival organizing committee chairman, stated, “We are preparing with utmost effort to create a Hongdo where all visitors can enjoy the Hongdo Wonchuri and beautiful scenery, with various cultural events and diverse activities, making them want to return again.”
