Hosting the 4th Marine Bio Forum to Become a Global Hub Nation in Marine Bio
Over 150 Marine Bio Experts Discuss Directions for Fostering the Bioeconomy
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Pohang City, Gyeongbuk Province, announced that the ‘4th Marine Bio Forum’ was held for two days from June 22 to 23 at the POSCO International Hall to expand the marine bioindustry base and promote industry-academia-research cooperation.
On this day, the ‘4th Marine Bio Forum’ was co-hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and Gyeongbuk Province to discuss the direction for fostering a bioeconomy based on marine bio technology, and the discussion results will be reflected in the future setting of key promotion directions for the marine bioindustry.
The opening ceremony was attended by about 150 people including Hong Jong-wook, Director of Marine Policy at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries; Lee Kang-deok, Mayor of Pohang; Kim Nam-il, Head of the East Sea Economic Zone Headquarters of Gyeongbuk Province; the Director of the National Marine Biodiversity Institute; the Director of the East Sea Industry Research Institute; the Marine Bio Society; marine bio experts; and businesspeople, where they sought ways to create competitiveness in the marine bioindustry ecosystem and development strategies.
The forum began with a keynote speech by Yoon Seok-hwan, Director of CJ CheilJedang BIO Technology Research Institute, titled ‘Bioindustry Trends - Focusing on Green Bio (Subtitle: Government’s Marine Bio Promotion and Support Direction),’ followed by presentations on ▲the current status and major issues of the global bioeconomy ▲challenges for advancing as a marine bio powerhouse ▲future promising bio technologies and marine bio ▲marine bioindustry promotion plans (focusing on marine biomedicals). Additionally, a corporate success case (industrial value of marine microalgae) was introduced, and after the presentations, a founding meeting for the association to build a marine bioindustry network was held.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok said, “Pohang, Gyeongbuk Province, is the largest fisheries production area on the East Coast and possesses diverse marine resources, making it the optimal location for the marine bioindustry,” adding, “The city will do its best to provide multifaceted support and cooperation to nurture future new industries so that it can become a leading city in the marine bio field.”

From the 22nd, a program introducing advanced marine bio materials held by marine-related institutions such as the National Marine Biodiversity Institute, National Institute of Fisheries Science, and KIOST was conducted as the ‘Marine Bio Materials Briefing Session,’ and during the forum period, a booth exhibition of marine bio companies and related organizations sharing industrialization achievements was held.
