View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Starting from the 23rd, the rainy season will begin nationwide, including the central and southern regions. From the 25th until the end of this month, heatwaves and heavy rains will alternate.
The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) held an unscheduled briefing on this day and forecasted that due to the stationary front and low-pressure system, rain will concentrate in the central region from the afternoon to nighttime of the 23rd, and heavy rain will fall in the southern region from the night of the 23rd to the early morning of the 24th. From the afternoon of the 23rd to the early morning of the 24th, heavy rain of about 30 to 50mm per hour is expected, with the possibility of a heavy rain advisory being issued.
More than 120mm of rain is expected in northern Gyeonggi, northwestern Gangwon Yeongseo, Jeolla region, and Jeju Island; about 30 to 100mm in the Seoul metropolitan area, Gangwon Yeongseo, Chungcheong region, northern Gyeongbuk, Jeolla region, inland western Gyeongnam, and Jeju Island. Gangwon Yeongdong, southern Gyeongbuk, and Gyeongnam regions are forecasted to receive about 10 to 70mm of rain.
Woo Jin-gyu, a forecast analyst at KMA, explained, "If the movement speed of the stationary front slows down, precipitation may increase further, and localized heavy rain developing rapidly in a short time will cause significant regional differences in rainfall."
From the 25th to the 27th, the rainy season will enter a lull, bringing hot weather. Due to the influence of high pressure, hot and humid air will flow in, and as the ground surface heats up, daytime maximum temperatures in Chungcheong Province and the southern regions will rise above 30 degrees Celsius. High humidity will increase the perceived temperature, raising the possibility of a heatwave advisory being issued. Dry air will flow in at the upper atmosphere, and humid air will settle in the lower layers, causing atmospheric instability and expected showers.
Between the 28th and 30th, the stationary front will reactivate, bringing rainy season rain mainly to the central region. However, there is high variability depending on the movement path of the low-pressure system coming down from the north. If the stationary front moves southward, rain may also fall in the southern regions.
Recently, during the rainy season, not only the stationary front but also the influence of dry air descending from the north has caused rain to fall nationwide all at once, followed by several days without rain.
