Harvesting of Seasonally Ripe Jindo Plumcot Begins
Developing a New Niche Crop Maximizing the Advantages of Jadu and Salgu
[Jindo=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-kyung] The harvest of plumcots, a hybrid of plums and apricots, is in full swing in Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do.
'Plumcot' is a compound word combining 'plum' and 'apricot,' a variety that complements the weaknesses and maximizes the strengths of both plums and apricots.
Jindo plumcots, in season from early June to late July, have a soft and rich aroma, firm flesh, and high sugar content.
Plumcots contain beta-carotene, an antioxidant, at levels more than 30 times higher than other fruits, which helps with fatigue recovery and immune system enhancement. They are also rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, dietary fiber, and anthocyanins, known to be effective for eye protection, skin beauty, and constipation relief.
Jindo plumcots began distribution to farms in 2017 as a replacement crop for Jindo green onions and are now in their third year of harvest.
