Prime Minister Han Duck-soo: "Actively Utilize Nuclear Power as a Means for Energy Security and Carbon Neutrality"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] Prime Minister Han Duck-soo attended the 'Energy and Climate Forum (MEF)' hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden and stated, "We will actively utilize nuclear power as a means of energy security and carbon neutrality."
The Prime Minister's Office announced on the 18th that Prime Minister Han expressed the new government's commitment to achieving the 2030 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target for greenhouse gas reduction during the MEF virtual summit held in Washington DC at around 9:30 PM Korean time on the 17th.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Han said, "The Korean government, as a responsible member of the international community, respects the spirit of the Paris Climate Agreement and will do its utmost to achieve the 2030 NDC submitted at the end of last year."
Our government has submitted a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% compared to 2018 levels by 2030.
Prime Minister Han introduced, "The Korean government recognizes climate issues as economic issues and matters of national security involving the lives and safety of its people, and is pursuing various policies." He added, "We will actively utilize nuclear power as a means of energy security and carbon neutrality, and establish a reasonable energy mix considering the harmony between nuclear power and renewable energy."
He further explained, "We plan to expand various energy sources such as renewable energy and hydrogen, and significantly increase investment in future nuclear technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)."
Prime Minister Han also explained the Korean government's commitment to the five joint goals of this forum: zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) deployment, methane reduction, promotion of clean technology, green shipping, and food security. "Korea has included the deployment of more than 4.5 million ZEVs by 2030 in its NDC plan and will do its best to achieve this," he said.

He continued, "Korea also plans to establish methane reduction plans in the agriculture and livestock, waste, and energy sectors to implement the Global Methane Pledge (GMP)."
