[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Gwi-yeol] The marine and fisheries national agenda of the Yoon Suk-yeol administration is rapidly taking shape in Gyeongbuk.

On the 14th, Gyeongbuk Province held a meeting of marine and fisheries department heads from cities and counties at the East Office conference room to discuss local implementation plans for the new government's marine and fisheries national agenda and regional pledges, and decided to proactively carry them out.

The marine and fisheries national agenda to be pursued over the five years of the Yoon Suk-yeol administration includes ▲ establishing a world-leading maritime transportation and logistics system ▲ protecting maritime territory and sustainable marine management ▲ prosperous fishing villages and vibrant marine environments.

The province will analyze these national agenda items in detail, prepare specific countermeasures for each project, and implement them quickly.

To innovate fishing villages into urban-level living spaces, the ‘Fishing Village (300 locations) New Vitality Promotion Project’ will ensure that as many local fishing villages as possible are reflected by conducting a preliminary status analysis of all fishing ports to identify project sites in advance and establish project plans according to priority.

Specialized fishing village experience and leisure village sites will be identified and incorporated into government plans, and active efforts will be made to attract autonomous fishery management hub centers, which are planned to be established in four locations nationwide.

Since the establishment of a fishery food cluster and a comprehensive processing complex is also included in the national agenda, the ‘Gyeongsangbuk-do Smart Fishery Processing Complex’ currently underway in Yeongdeok will be refined in detail according to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ direction.

Efforts will also be actively made to modernize aging auction markets.

Among the 21 mountain area auction markets in the province, 10 will be prioritized for improvement, and specific project plans will be prepared for each auction market.

Focus will also be placed on the marine leisure tourism sector.

To attract complex marine leisure tourism cities, hub-type marinas, and fishing complex towns, research service fees will be secured in the supplementary budget, and proactive procedures such as establishing basic plans will be initiated.

The Homigot National Marine Garden plans to apply for a government preliminary feasibility study in the second half of this year.

Additionally, seeing private investment attraction as essential for these projects, the province and cities/counties will jointly form a task force (T/F) to operate.

Joint responses with cities and counties will also be made regarding the construction of disaster-safe ports, creation of safe coastal areas for citizens, expansion of carbon sinks (blue carbon), distribution of eco-friendly buoys, strengthening prevention and collection of marine litter, expansion of radioactive testing of seafood, origin control, and traceability systems.

Separately, meticulous strategies will be prepared for the marine and fisheries regional pledges confirmed by the Presidential Transition Committee’s Regional Balanced Development Special Committee, and efforts to secure national funding will begin immediately.

Regional pledges in the marine and fisheries sector in Gyeongbuk include about 10 projects such as the Pohang Yeongilman Port smart port system construction, establishment of the National Dokdo Archive Center, establishment of the Ulleungdo-Dokdo Ecological Research Center, creation of the Gyeongju Gampo Marine Leisure Complex District, development of the Wangdolcho National Underwater Park Belt, designation of the Ulleung-gun Jukdo Marine Scenic District, creation of the Pohang International Surfing Special Zone, development of the Yeongilman Youth Marine Culture Park, and construction of a smart aquafarm.

Kim Seong-hak, Director of the Marine and Fisheries Bureau of Gyeongbuk Province, said, “Since the final place where the government’s national agenda is implemented is the local field, the willingness of local governments to act is most important,” and added, “Gyeongbuk will take the lead in establishing concrete implementation strategies for each detailed project contained in the national agenda and quickly connecting them to visible results.”
